Instructional Design
In the fire safety course, I have included scenarios and an escape room to add elements of adult learning theory, specifically concrete learning and active experimentation. Using the Escape room as an assessment forces learners to use critical thinking skills to formulate concepts and procedures. Adding the time limit creates a little stress that provokes an emotional response that helps learners remember the content. The learner is allowed multiple attempts which allows the learner to reflect on what they know and don’t know. Using the menu bar allows the learner to reflect and review and content they still need to master the content. Since this is a compliance training that is taken yearly, the learner has the option to skip straight to the assessment. This will give them control and feedback on what they know and still need to learn, which is an important piece of adult learning theory.
